Wasp infestations usually go through several different stages over the course of an infestation, usually maintaining a low profile in the early weeks as they build up their hive, preying on garden pests like aphids and feeding the wasp larvae back in the hive. Soon, however, the hive will have grown from a few inches to over a foot or more, and will be producing more and more wasps every day at a rate of hundreds.

At this point of the infestation, when the hive is running at peak capacity, the wasps will have begun eating fruit or human food and food waste, and this changing diet also serves to make them more aggressive and more assertive of their territory. With their large numbers and their strong protective instinct, these wasps will attack anyone or anything nearby with only the slightest provocation, and large stinging frenzies can form with little apparent warning.

Most of the calls for extermination come during this peak season, usually in the warmest months of the year, and many customers have either been unaware before that point that their property was infested, or assumed that the wasps' apparently peaceful behaviour would last. If allowed to grow to full size, a single hive can prove an extreme nuisance and even a danger to a property's inhabitants, as their attacks grow in frequency and severity.

Those wasps that are touched by the powder will take several hours to die, but will be generally incapacitated in that time, while any other wasps may take slightly longer, although they too will pose no real threat, as without the hive they are unable to co-ordinate their actions, and they soon die of exposure.
